Wike Speaks On Rivers Assembly Members’ Defection

Join APC, leave PDP, ADC, LP alone - Tonye Cole tells Wike

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has expressed his concern over the recent defection of 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The defection, which occurred on December 5, 2025, was reportedly done without consulting Wike, and it has heightened political tension in the state.

The Rivers State had just emerged from a six-month emergency rule when the 17 lawmakers, including Speaker Martins Amaewhule, left the PDP for the APC. This move was followed by Governor Sim Fubara’s own defection from the PDP to the APC, amid a leadership crisis in the former ruling party. Wike, who spoke at the Assembly Quarters on Saturday, acknowledged that the defection affected him, but he vowed to support the remaining members of the assembly who have not defected.

Wike emphasized the importance of party leadership being vigilant and proactive in retaining its members. He stated that the defection of the 17 lawmakers was a result of the party’s failure to keep its house in order, allowing “enemies” to take advantage of the situation. The minister assured the remaining members of the assembly that he would ensure they do not suffer in their political careers.

The defection of the 17 lawmakers has significant implications for the political landscape of Rivers State. The state had recently experienced a period of instability, and the defection has added to the existing tension. Wike’s comments highlight the need for party leaders to be proactive in managing their membership and preventing defections. The situation in Rivers State will likely continue to evolve, with potential repercussions for the state’s political stability and the balance of power in the region.
