Nigeria’s recent joint airstrike with the United States against terrorist targets in north‑west Nigeria has raised concerns among experts. The operation, intended to hit insurgents in the Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, has prompted questions about the unintended consequences of such collaborations.
Diplomacy expert Ahmad Isma’il warned that Nigeria should be cautious when conducting joint military actions with the United States, noting that the U.S. often acts in its own interests rather than out of goodwill. He criticized the Nigerian government’s handling of the strike, pointing to discrepancies between U.S. and Nigerian accounts. The U.S. Department of War released a video of the attack, which followed remarks by former President Donald Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth about the killing of Christians in Nigeria and a warning of tougher action if the violence continued.
The Nigerian government confirmed that the cooperation resulted in precise airstrikes in the north‑west, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stating that the partnership includes intelligence sharing, strategic coordination and other support. However, retired security expert Captain Abdullahi Bakoji cautioned that the strike carries both advantages and risks. While U.S. drones and satellites can enhance surveillance and intelligence gathering, their presence may be perceived as interference, providing propaganda material for insurgents and potentially undermining Nigeria’s sovereignty. Bakoji also warned that civilian casualties remain a danger and emphasized that Nigeria’s insecurity stems from deep‑rooted causes that cannot be solved by military action alone.
The incident underscores the complexities of international cooperation in counter‑terrorism. As Nigeria continues to grapple with insecurity, the partnership with the United States has sparked debate over its potential benefits and drawbacks. The Nigerian government maintains that the collaboration complies with international law and respects sovereignty, but experts remain wary of possible unintended consequences.
