Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has reiterated his commitment to supporting President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing the importance of honoring political agreements. During a visit to Rivers State, Wike attended a public function and end-of-year thanksgiving service in Ochigba, Ahoada East Local Government Area, where he addressed stakeholders and top political figures.

Wike recalled his open support for Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, a time when it was politically risky in the state. He stated that his support was driven by conviction, rather than convenience, and that loyalty shown during critical periods should not be forgotten. The minister criticized some political actors in Rivers State for their opportunistic loyalty, noting that many who now publicly support the President remained silent during the critical period before the election.

Wike’s political philosophy is rooted in consistency and honoring agreements, and he warned that betrayal of political understandings can fuel instability. After the event, he proceeded to the Rivers State Assembly Quarters, where he was received by the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule. The Speaker thanked Wike for his continued support for the Assembly, describing his role as crucial in sustaining stability within the legislature.

Wike commended the lawmakers for adhering to the terms of an existing peace agreement in the state but criticized external political interests seeking to benefit from Rivers State without regard for its people. He accused these actors of exploiting the state’s resources while fueling internal divisions. The minister disclosed that active political engagements would resume from January next year and maintained that his camp would not shy away from political contestation.

Wike’s visit highlighted ongoing political alliances in Rivers State, but his comments also raised questions about the sustainability of the fragile peace currently holding in the state. The minister’s emphasis on honoring agreements and his criticism of opportunistic loyalty underscore the complexities of the state’s political landscape. As the year ahead unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the existing peace agreement can be sustained, and how the political engagements scheduled to resume in January will shape the state’s political dynamics.
