Nigerians paying cheapest domestic air fares in the world – Air Peace boss, Onyema

The cost of domestic air travel in Nigeria has sparked controversy, with many Nigerians complaining about high fares. In a recent interview on Arise Television, Allen Onyema, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, countered this perception by claiming that Nigerians actually pay the cheapest domestic air fares in the world. He compared the price of a one‑hour flight abroad—often exceeding $400—to Nigerian tickets that can be purchased for as little as N125,000, or less than $60.

Onyema explained that this price disparity is a major factor behind the high mortality rate of airlines in Nigeria, noting that more than 80 carriers have ceased operations in recent years. He argued that such low fares are unsustainable and place a strain on the aviation industry. Consequently, he urged the public to understand the challenges airlines face and to allow them to operate without undue pressure.

His remarks underscore the need for a balanced approach to air‑travel pricing that considers both operating costs and the necessity for airlines to remain profitable. While the Nigerian aviation sector has experienced significant growth—evidenced by increasing passenger numbers and expanding routes—it continues to grapple with infrastructure constraints and high operating expenses.

The debate over air‑travel pricing is likely to persist as stakeholders seek equilibrium between affordability and sustainability. Within the global aviation landscape, Nigeria’s domestic market is distinctive, driven by a large and growing demand for air travel. Aviation authorities and airlines are working to improve infrastructure and services while addressing the challenges posed by low fares and high operating costs. As the industry evolves, pricing will remain a central topic of discussion.
