The African Democratic Congress has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s decision to travel to Europe amid escalating security concerns in Nigeria. Party spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi described the move as “insensitive and alarming,” noting that Nigerians were awaiting reassurance from the President when news of his trip emerged.
Abdullahi’s criticism follows Tinubu’s departure for Europe to attend the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Summit, where he will meet global leaders on climate action, economic reforms and sustainable development. The spokesperson argued that the foreign trip comes at a troubling moment, as the country grapples with renewed insecurity, including a recent deadly bomb blast in Zamfara State and heightened public anxiety after a US military strike on Nigerian soil. He expressed concern that the President’s silence on critical national‑security issues, combined with his absence from the country, raises serious questions about leadership responsiveness during a period of national distress.
The President’s European travel is part of his end‑of‑year break, preceding an official visit to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He is scheduled to participate in the 2026 edition of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit, following an invitation from UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The summit, themed “The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go,” will convene government, business and civil‑society leaders to advance global conversations on sustainable development. Tinubu’s agenda in Abu Dhabi is expected to focus on linking innovation, finance and people to drive sustainable growth.
As Nigeria continues to face security challenges, the President’s decision to travel abroad has drawn criticism from opposition parties and sparked debate over his administration’s priorities. The episode underscores the need for effective leadership and clear communication during crises, as the country seeks to address its security concerns and the expectations of its citizens.
