The Labour Party has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s decision to embark on a European holiday amidst Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges. Acting National Chairman Nenadi Usman described the trip as insensitive, given the violent attacks and humanitarian crises affecting the country. Usman emphasized the need for the President to remain in Nigeria and oversee security responses.

The criticism comes as Nigeria faces heightened security concerns, including a recent bomb blast in Zamfara that killed nine people. The Labour Party has accused the government of downplaying the severity of the situation, which it claims is under external attack. Usman noted that the President has not convened critical security meetings since the US-led airstrikes on terrorist camps in Kwara and Sokoto States.

President Tinubu’s trip to Europe is part of his scheduled official visit to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates for the Sustainability Week Summit. The visit was initiated by an invitation from UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. However, the timing of the trip has raised concerns, given the current security situation in Nigeria.

The US had recently conducted airstrikes on terrorist camps in Sokoto State, with Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs acknowledging the operation. The airstrikes were authorized by US President Donald Trump on Christmas Day. The security situation in Nigeria has been a subject of concern, with various incidents of violence and terrorist attacks reported in recent times.

The Labour Party’s criticism highlights the need for the government to prioritize the country’s security challenges. The party’s concerns are centered on the perceived lack of engagement with military leadership and the government’s response to the security situation. As Nigeria continues to face security challenges, the government’s approach to addressing these issues is likely to remain under scrutiny. The President’s decision to travel abroad at this time may be seen as a test of his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the country’s security needs.
