Rivers Govt reaffirms commitment to workers welfare

The Rivers State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of its workforce by approving and paying a N100,000 Christmas bonus to all civil and public servants, as well as pensioners on the state payroll. This marks the third consecutive year the administration has extended the bonus since taking office. Governor Siminalayi Fubara recently authorized the payment, which was welcomed by Alex Agwanwor, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Rivers State Council. Agwanwor praised the governor’s gesture as a demonstration of responsive, worker‑friendly governance.

According to Dr. Honour Sirawoo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, the bonus is a token of appreciation for the dedication shown by civil and public servants throughout the year. He emphasized that public servants are the state’s greatest pride and that the administration remains committed to prioritizing their welfare. The payment forms part of the government’s proactive policies aimed at providing a social safety net for employees and their families amid prevailing economic pressures.

The state government values its relationship with the NLC, viewing the union as a vital partner in the “Rivers First” development agenda. The NLC’s public acknowledgement of the bonus underscores the harmonious relationship between the current administration and the labour union. Dr. Sirawoo noted that the Christmas bonus is intended to brighten the festive season while the long‑term goal remains the consistent improvement of the working environment and the welfare of every individual serving Rivers State.

Overall, the payment of the Christmas bonus demonstrates the state government’s dedication to employee well‑being. As Rivers State continues to navigate economic challenges, this proactive approach to workforce welfare is likely to have a positive impact on the state’s overall development, reinforcing the administration’s reputation as a worker‑friendly government committed to supporting its employees and fostering a positive work environment.
