Rivers: Fubara has breached agreement brokered by Tinubu - Wike alleges

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara of backing out of an agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu to resolve the state’s ongoing political crisis. Wike made the claim during a visit to the people of Tai Local Government Area in Rivers State, saying he intends to publicly disclose the details of the agreement that was reached in the President’s presence.

The agreement resulted from a closed‑door meeting convened by President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja in June 2025, which brought Wike and Fubara together to end the prolonged power struggle that has plagued Rivers State. The crisis had led to a state of emergency and the suspension of the governor and members of the State House of Assembly. According to Wike, Governor Fubara has failed to uphold certain aspects of the accord.

Wike criticized Fubara’s actions, arguing that reneging on an agreement made in the President’s presence undermines the credibility of the negotiation process. He questioned Fubara’s political tactics, implying that failing to honor commitments at such a high level is not a sign of clever politics. Wike emphasized that the agreement was not made in private but in the President’s presence, adding gravity to the alleged breach.

The political crisis in Rivers State has been ongoing, leaving the region unstable. President Tinubu’s involvement in brokering the agreement was meant to bring an end to the turmoil, but Wike’s accusation that Fubara has reneged suggests the situation remains unresolved. As Wike prepares to make the agreement’s details public, the issue is likely to attract further attention and scrutiny. The next steps in resolving the crisis are uncertain, but the disclosure may shed light on the underlying problems and the path forward for Rivers State.
