Obi still bitter about losing 2023 election - Tinubu's spokesman

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has responded to Peter Obi’s recent defection to the African Democratic Congress. Onanuga said that Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, still appears bitter about the outcome of the 2023 election, nearly three years later.

Onanuga’s comments came after Obi’s speech at his defection event, where Obi claimed to have learned from international models and experts on national development. Onanuga argued that Obi’s approach is flawed because it fails to consider Nigeria’s unique circumstances and needs. He noted that what works in other countries, such as Indonesia or the United States, may not be applicable in Nigeria.

The adviser also criticized Obi’s record as governor, stating that he was unsuccessful in his eight‑year tenure in Anambra State. He suggested that Obi’s posturing should be viewed with skepticism given his lack of achievements in a smaller political context.

Onanuga emphasized that President Tinubu has been working to address Nigeria’s challenges since taking office on May 29, 2023, and implied that Obi’s bitter remarks stem from his own disappointment and inability to acknowledge the progress made by the current administration.

Obi’s defection to the African Democratic Congress has sparked interest in Nigerian politics, as he has switched parties multiple times in recent years. His comments on national development and his experience as governor have been scrutinized, with some questioning his ability to lead the country effectively. The exchange between Onanuga and Obi highlights the ongoing debates and rivalries within Nigerian politics, and as the nation navigates its challenges, discussions about leadership, governance, and development are likely to remain prominent in the national conversation.
