The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, Nigeria, has underscored the importance of a strong opposition for the country’s democratic system. Prof. Sylvester Monye, state chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee, emphasized that a functional opposition is essential for Nigeria’s democracy. In a New Year message, he stressed that adherence to democratic principles will safeguard the integrity and independence of all political parties, including the PDP.
Monye’s remarks come as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections, with the 2026 party primaries representing a critical milestone. He urged all political actors to follow due process, internal democracy, and high standards of political conduct, warning that decisions made now will have far‑reaching consequences for Nigeria’s democratic framework.
The PDP is currently involved in several court cases. Monye noted that the Supreme Court has consistently affirmed that internal party affairs should be managed by the parties themselves, without undue judicial interference. He cited recent decisions such as *Anyanwu v. PDP* and *SDP v. INEC*, which reinforced party autonomy and called for judicial restraint.
Assuring the people of Delta State, Monye said the PDP remains committed to protecting their interests and aspirations. The Caretaker Committee will continue engaging with stakeholders across the state, focusing on good governance, development, and the rule of law. The party is also working to reorganize and strengthen itself after recent defections and to prepare for orderly congresses that will install new executive officers.
The PDP’s dedication to constitutionalism, constructive engagement, and principled leadership is evident in its efforts to maintain a strong, functional opposition within Nigeria’s democratic system. As the country moves toward the 2027 elections, opposition parties like the PDP will be crucial in preserving the democratic process. With its emphasis on democratic principles and internal party management, the PDP is poised to play a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape in the years ahead.
