PDP Warns Against One-Party State in Nigeria

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, Nigeria, has emphasized the importance of a strong opposition in the country’s democratic system. According to Prof. Sylvester Monye, the state chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee, a functional opposition is crucial for Nigeria’s democracy. In a New Year message, Monye stressed that adherence to democratic principles will ensure the integrity and independence of all political parties, including the PDP.

Monye’s statement comes as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections, with the 2026 party primaries being a significant step in the process. The PDP chairman urged all political actors to adhere to due process, internal democracy, and high standards of political conduct, warning that decisions made now will have far-reaching consequences for Nigeria’s democratic system.

The PDP is currently involved in certain court cases, and Monye noted that the Supreme Court has consistently stated that internal party affairs should be managed by the party itself, without undue judicial interference. He cited recent court decisions, including Anyanwu v. PDP and SDP v. INEC, which affirmed the autonomy of political parties and the need for courts to exercise restraint.

Monye assured the people of Delta State that the PDP remains committed to protecting their interests and aspirations. The Caretaker Committee will continue to engage with stakeholders across the state, focusing on good governance, development, and the rule of law. The party is also working to reorganize and strengthen itself, particularly in the wake of recent defections, and to prepare for the orderly conduct of congresses that will usher in new executive officers.

The PDP’s commitment to constitutionalism, constructive engagement, and principled leadership is evident in its efforts to maintain a strong and functional opposition in Nigeria’s democratic system. As the country moves towards the 2027 general elections, the role of opposition parties like the PDP will be crucial in ensuring that the democratic process remains intact. With its emphasis on democratic principles and internal party management, the PDP is poised to play a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape in the years to come.
