Akwa Ibom 2026 budget ratified at ₦1.39 trillion

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has ratified the 2026 appropriation bill, totaling ₦1.39 trillion. This move follows the submission of the report by Dr. Itorobong Etim, Chair of the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, which outlined the fiscal proposal’s key components. The bill allocates ₦354.87 billion for current expenditure and ₦1.035 trillion for capital projects.

Governor Umo Eno had presented the budgetary framework to the House of Assembly on November 25, 2025, for assessment. The House subsequently constituted itself into a Committee of Supply to scrutinize the 2026 appropriation bill, which underwent its third reading before being approved. According to Dr. Etim, the committee employed a collaborative approach in its legislative budgetary procedure, inviting government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other relevant entities to participate in a public hearing on the budget.

The appropriation bill, dubbed “The People’s Budget of Expansion and Growth,” was ratified after thorough deliberation at the Committee of Supply. Speaker Udeme Otong lauded lawmakers for their commitment and synergy, which facilitated the prompt passage of the budget. He also acknowledged the administration and personnel of the Assembly, as well as other stakeholders, for their support and input that contributed to the fruitful legislative process.

The ratified budget is notable for its allocation of significant funds towards capital projects, which is expected to drive economic growth and development in the state. The House has instructed the Clerk to communicate its resolution to Governor Umo Eno for ratification. The Assembly has adjourned its session and is set to reconvene on January 13, 2026.

The passage of the 2026 appropriation bill marks a significant milestone in the state’s budgetary process. The allocation of funds towards key sectors is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s economy and development. As the bill awaits ratification by the governor, the state’s residents and stakeholders will be closely watching its implementation and the subsequent effects on the state’s growth and expansion.
