Stakeholders from Borno State have called on Governors Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde to set aside their differences and work toward party unity in order to resolve the ongoing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party. Led by Chairman Grema Kyari, the group made the appeal in Maiduguri, emphasizing that loyalty must be realigned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
The appeal comes as the PDP continues to grapple with internal conflicts, especially after the Ibadan Convention’s outcome was rejected by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The stakeholders welcomed the commission’s decision and praised the Abdulrahman Mohammed‑led National Working Caretaker Committee for dissolving the Borno State PDP Executive Committee and approving a new caretaker committee. Kyari, a member of the caretaker committee, said these actions have revived hope among party members in Borno State and reflect the aspirations of faithful members who have long awaited justice and internal democracy.
The group also commended Wike’s commitment to discipline and institutional integrity, describing it as unprecedented given the pressure from Governors Mohammed and Makinde. They expressed concern that the deepening internal crisis is attributable to the actions of the two governors and Barrister Kabiru Turaki, urging them to “sheath their swords” and prioritize party unity. The stakeholders stressed that Wike’s role in strengthening and repositioning the PDP is well known and that his leadership is essential for resolving the current crisis.
This development is the latest in a series of efforts to address the PDP’s internal conflicts, which have raised doubts about the party’s ability to present a united front in upcoming elections. As stakeholders continue to push for unity, the party’s navigation of these challenges will be crucial for its future prospects and its capacity to compete effectively in the political landscape.
