African Democratic Congress Rejects Tinubu’s Re-election Bid

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially distanced itself from supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re‑election bid in 2027. Party national chairman Nafiu Bala Gombe made this clear during the inauguration of the ADC’s zonal and state congress and appeal committees in Abuja. The inauguration is part of the party’s effort to strengthen internal democratic structures and build a credible opposition platform. The newly formed committees will oversee the planning and conduct of congresses at various levels, ensuring strict compliance with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act. Gombe emphasized that these committees are essential for enforcing constitutional compliance, implementing congress guidelines, and upholding electoral regulations.

During the same event, Gombe rejected a statement attributed to Hon. Leke Joseph Abijide that expressed support for President Tinubu’s re‑election, stating that the statement does not reflect the ADC’s position as a determined opposition party. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to being a strong force in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Abimikun Monday, chairman of the Congress Committee for the North‑West geopolitical zone, described the inauguration as a significant step toward repositioning the party. He assured the party’s leadership that the committee is ready to deliver on its mandate, which includes overseeing the planning and execution of zonal, state, and local‑government congresses.

Kaduna State ADC Chairman Sani Aliyu Mohammed pledged the party’s determination to win power through democratic means. He highlighted the party’s commitment to effective organization and success from the state level down to local governments, thanked members for their support, and assured them of the leadership’s dedication to fulfilling the committees’ mandate.

The ADC’s move to strengthen its internal structures and distance itself from President Tinubu’s re‑election bid is significant as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections.
