Former lawmaker and social critic Senator Shehu Sani has warned that Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria Godwin Emefiele could face serious challenges once President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) leaves office on May 29. Describing Emefiele’s position as “a zebra in the hands of tigers,” Sani suggested that the CBN chief will be vulnerable when Buhari becomes an ex‑president later this year.

The warning comes amid reports that President‑elect Bola Tinubu and several All Progressives Congress governors are displeased with the recent naira redesign policy. The redesign has caused widespread hardship for many Nigerians due to a shortage of the new notes. In response, the Supreme Court last week extended the validity of the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes until December 31, ordering the CBN to continue accepting them. The court ruled that the President’s directive to redesign the notes without proper consultation was invalid.

Sani reiterated his view on his verified Twitter account on Saturday, stating that without Buhari’s protection, Emefiele will be “like a zebra in the hands of tigers.”
