Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has urged states across Nigeria to adopt the political alliance model of Rivers State, which he believes has been successful in building a wide-ranging coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections. Wike made this remark during a thank-you visit to Ahoada West Local Government Area, where he emphasized the importance of unity and collective commitment to national progress.
According to Wike, Rivers State’s ability to rally support across party lines for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is unparalleled. He attributed this success to a long-standing culture of cooperation, consensus-building, and mutual respect, which has enabled the state to withstand attempts to weaken its political structure. Wike described the state’s political engagement as having evolved beyond partisan loyalty, with decisions now being dictated by a sense of unity and shared interest.
The minister expressed confidence that political actors would eventually come together on a common platform, stressing that unity remains a crucial factor in electoral contests. He also warned against taking popularity for granted, citing past experiences where agreements had produced undesirable outcomes. Wike dismissed the influence of opposition forces in the state, insisting that the will of the people had prevailed and that no group had been sidelined in the political process.
Wike commended Rivers residents for their support of President Tinubu, describing their decision as bold and patriotic. He also spoke about his appointment as FCT minister, which he believed reflected the character and contribution of Rivers people to national development. The minister urged Nigerians to support leaders and policies that deliver visible results, emphasizing that governance should be judged by performance rather than sentiment.
In his remarks, Wike thanked his supporters for their loyalty and assured them of sustained engagement. The Chairman of Ahoada West Local Government Area, Hon. Chita Eugene Epelle, welcomed Wike and praised his leadership qualities and record in public service. Epelle reaffirmed the council’s support for Wike and prayed for his continued strength, wisdom, and good health as he serves the nation.
The visit highlights Wike’s efforts to promote unity and cooperation among political stakeholders ahead of the 2027 general elections. As the country approaches this critical period, the minister’s call for states to adopt the Rivers State model may have significant implications for Nigeria’s political landscape. With the elections looming, it remains to be seen how Wike’s strategy will play out and whether it will yield the desired results for President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
