Rivers State Turmoil Attributed to Broken Agreements

A former Nigerian lawmaker, Olaka Nwogu, has attributed the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State to the failure of leaders to adhere to agreements. In an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Sunday Politics’, Nwogu stated that the crisis is a consequence of leaders not keeping their commitments.

According to Nwogu, the troubles in Rivers State began when an initial agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu was not honored by the state’s governor. The agreement, which included an eight-point plan, was intended to bring stability to the state. However, the lack of adherence to the agreement led to its collapse.

The situation escalated to the point where the Supreme Court ruled that there was no effective governance in Rivers State, prompting the President to impose a state of emergency to prevent the state from descending into chaos. During this period, discussions were held to find a way to restore political harmony in the state.

Nwogu explained that after the state of emergency was imposed, leaders in the state came together and reached a new understanding, with the President serving as a guarantor. However, the failure to adhere to this new agreement has led to the current crisis in Rivers State.

The former lawmaker emphasized that governing a complex state like Rivers requires leaders to be committed to their agreements. The lack of adherence to commitments has resulted in the ongoing turmoil, which has significant implications for the state’s stability and development.

The situation in Rivers State is a pressing concern, and the failure to address the underlying issues may lead to further instability. The state’s leaders must find a way to work together and honor their commitments to restore peace and stability to the region. The federal government’s role in brokering agreements and ensuring their implementation will also be crucial in resolving the crisis.
