The All Progressives Congress (APC) is experiencing a resurgence in Abia State, according to a statement released by the APC South‑East Mandate Forum in Umuahia. The Forum observed that political engagement across Abia’s communities is beginning to reshape the state’s political landscape, even though the state is currently governed by the Labour Party.
The Forum attributes the APC’s growing influence to the leadership of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, whose actions have sparked a wave of defections from both the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. Thousands of grassroots supporters have reportedly abandoned their former parties, tearing up their old party cards in the process. The Forum argues that the scale of these defections reflects rising public dissatisfaction with the governing Labour Party and a renewed confidence in the APC as a credible alternative.
Chief Onyebuchi Okorie, coordinator of the APC South‑East Mandate Forum, said the defections demonstrate the APC’s direction, leadership, and seriousness of purpose. He described the movement as people‑driven, with ordinary citizens feeling reconnected to a party that understands their everyday realities. Confidence among party members has risen, and more people are joining the APC because they believe they will have a voice, relevance, and protection within the party—not merely out of dissatisfaction with other parties.
The Forum views this political shift in Abia as an early indicator of a broader realignment ahead of the 2027 elections. The APC is steadily regaining its footing in the state, laying foundations that are expected to be significant as Abia moves closer to the 2027 polls. Central to this reawakening is a leader who recognises that political victory begins at the grassroots level.
