General Ibrahim Sani Yakasai, the Kano State governorship candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement, pledged on Sunday that, if elected, he would prioritize the creation of employment opportunities. Speaking at Mambayya House, Yakasai warned that idleness caused by unemployment has driven many Kano youths toward drug addiction, a vice that fuels crime. He asserted that providing jobs would not only keep young people busy but also involve them in the state’s economic development, thereby improving both individual and collective quality of life. “When youths are gainfully engaged, they will not think of drug addiction because an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. Engaging them in socio‑economic development will reduce crime, as studies link drug abuse to criminal behavior,” he said.

Yakasai also promised to ban street hawking by innocent young girls, who are often lured and sexually abused, stating that his administration would restore sanity in this area. In addition, he pledged to focus on health care, agriculture, and the reactivation of dormant industries in Sharada and surrounding areas. He vowed to revive Kano’s agricultural glory—once famed for its groundnut pyramids—and to promote industrialization by improving power generation. This, he said, would create fresh employment opportunities, lay a solid economic foundation, and restore Kano’s status as a commercial hub in the North, second only to Lagos.
