Bauchi appoints 142 new district heads

The Bauchi State government has appointed 142 new district heads across 20 emirates and one chiefdom to strengthen traditional leadership and grassroots administration. This initiative forms part of the state’s broader effort to reinforce traditional institutions and improve local governance.

Abubakar Muhammad Wabi, Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, explained that the appointments were made under the Bauchi State Chieftaincy (Appointment and Deposition) Law 2025, which provides a framework for restructuring and recognizing traditional institutions. He announced the appointments at a press briefing in Bauchi, noting that all appointees have received their letters and can begin work immediately.

The creation of 20 Emirate Councils and chiefdoms under the new law required qualified district heads to manage community affairs effectively. The government believes this will enhance cooperation between traditional rulers and government authorities, especially at the grassroots level. Wabi emphasized that the appointments will facilitate better coordination, contributing to more effective governance.

The commission chairman praised Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed for supporting reforms of the traditional system and thanked other stakeholders for their cooperation. He urged the new district heads to serve their communities with fairness and accountability, underscoring the state’s commitment to peace, unity, and sustainable development.

With the new law in place, the appointment of district heads marks a significant step toward enhancing traditional governance in Bauchi State. The government aims to ensure that traditional institutions play a more effective role in promoting community development and social cohesion. As they assume their roles, the new district heads are expected to work closely with government authorities to address community needs and promote the overall well‑being of the state.
