Lawmaker Murphy Osaro Omoruyi, representing Egor/Ikpoba-Okha Federal Constituency in Edo State, has defected from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Party (ADC). Omoruyi, who was initially elected on the Labour Party platform, cited the poor governance of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government as the reason for his decision.
At a press conference in Benin City, Omoruyi explained that he chose ADC over APC due to the difficulties faced by Nigerians under the current administration. He highlighted issues such as insecurity, hunger, and poor road conditions, stating that the government has made life challenging for citizens. The lawmaker also accused the President Bola Tinubu-led government of failing to implement the 2025 budget, instead implementing the 2024 budget.
Omoruyi’s defection comes after he resigned from the Labour Party in December 2025, citing internal crisis within the party at both state and national levels. He expressed his commitment to working with ADC leaders and stakeholders to promote good governance and effective representation. The lawmaker emphasized his loyalty to his constituents, stating that his decision to join ADC is aimed at better serving their interests and securing a brighter future for the constituency.
As the only Labour Party lawmaker in the state, Omoruyi’s defection to ADC is seen as a significant move ahead of the 2027 general election. He has pledged to work towards removing the APC-led Federal Government, citing the need for a change in leadership to address the country’s challenges. With his defection, Omoruyi joins a coalition of like-minded individuals seeking to rescue Nigeria from the current administration. The development is expected to have implications for the country’s political landscape, as stakeholders and citizens alike await the outcome of the 2027 elections.
