ADC unveils timetable, guidelines for 2025/2026 congresses, national convention

Lawmaker Murphy Osaro Omoruyi, who represents the Egor/Ikpoba‑Okha Federal Constituency in Edo State, has defected from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Party (ADC). Originally elected on the Labour Party platform, Omoruyi cited the poor governance of the All Progressives Congress (APC)‑led federal government as the primary reason for his switch.

Speaking at a press conference in Benin City, Omoruyi explained that he chose the ADC over the APC because Nigerians are facing severe difficulties under the current administration. He highlighted insecurity, hunger and deteriorating road conditions, arguing that the government has made life increasingly challenging for citizens. He also accused President Bola Tinubu’s government of failing to implement the 2025 budget, instead applying the 2024 budget.

Omoruyi’s defection follows his resignation from the Labour Party in December 2025, which he attributed to an internal crisis within the party at both state and national levels. He affirmed his commitment to working with ADC leaders and stakeholders to promote good governance and effective representation, emphasizing his loyalty to his constituents and his desire to serve their interests more effectively.

As the sole Labour Party lawmaker in Edo State, Omoruyi’s move to the ADC is seen as a significant development ahead of the 2027 general election. He pledged to work towards removing the APC‑led federal government, citing the need for a change in leadership to address the country’s challenges. By joining a coalition of like‑minded individuals, Omoruyi aims to help rescue Nigeria from the current administration, a shift that could have notable implications for the nation’s political landscape as stakeholders and citizens await the outcome of the 2027 elections.
