Burkina Faso foils new coup attempt amid tensions

Authorities in Burkina Faso have foiled a new coup attempt, amid escalating political tensions in the West African nation. The alleged plot was uncovered on Saturday, January 3, before it could be executed, according to official sources.

A pro-government web television outlet initially reported the information, citing security officials, which was later confirmed by government authorities. The situation is currently under control, with security forces remaining on high alert.

In a televised address, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, revealed that the plan involved a coordinated effort to destabilize the country through targeted assassinations of both civilian and military leaders. The plot was reportedly scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. and would have targeted the head of state, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, either at close range or through an operation aimed at mining his residence.

According to Minister Sana, investigations are ongoing, and arrests have already been made. He warned that all those implicated would face prosecution and the full force of the law. The minister also praised the country’s intelligence services for preventing another attempt to destabilize Burkina Faso.

This alleged plot is the latest in a series of attempts to remove Captain Traoré, who seized power in 2022 after overthrowing Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba. Since the takeover, Burkina Faso has experienced persistent political uncertainty, with repeated reports of coup attempts and ongoing security challenges. The country’s history of instability and the recent foiled plot highlight the need for continued vigilance and cooperation among security forces to maintain order and stability.

The thwarted coup attempt underscores the complex security landscape in Burkina Faso, where the government faces numerous challenges in maintaining control and ensuring the safety of its citizens. As the investigation unfolds, the government’s ability to address these challenges and prevent future attempts to destabilize the country will be closely watched. The international community will likely be monitoring the situation, given the potential implications for regional stability and security.
