Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has made remarks about former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, comparing him to Premier League football players who frequently change clubs. During an interview on The Clarity Zone Podcast, Bwala described Obi as a political figure who has changed parties multiple times.
Bwala noted that Obi has a significant online presence, with many supporters on social media who criticize others for changing parties, yet seem to condone Obi’s own party affiliations changes. He pointed out that after the 2023 election, Obi lost support from many of his former allies, including House of Representatives and Senators. Additionally, the only governor who had supported Obi is no longer associated with him.
Bwala also observed that Obi’s candidates, who had run in various elections across Nigeria, were unsuccessful. He questioned Obi’s claim of building a movement, suggesting that this term implies a departure from traditional politics. Bwala argued that Obi’s actions, such as changing parties, may lead people to doubt his intentions to govern Nigeria effectively.
Obi’s party affiliations have indeed changed over time, from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), then to the Labour Party, and most recently, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Bwala’s comparison of Obi to Premier League football players who change clubs every season highlights the frequency of these changes.
The comments made by Bwala reflect the complex and dynamic nature of Nigerian politics, where party affiliations and alliances can shift rapidly. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how Obi’s actions and movements will impact his supporters and the broader political scene in Nigeria.
