Despite the ongoing drama between Prince Harry and the British royal family, King Charles III has invited the self‑exiled duke and his wife, Meghan Markle, to attend his coronation in May. A spokesperson for the couple confirmed the news to The Times (UK) on Saturday, stating, “I can confirm the Duke has recently received email correspondence from His Majesty’s office regarding the coronation.”
The invitation arrives amid several public criticisms of the monarchy by the couple. Harry and Meghan moved to the United States in 2020 after stepping down as senior royals, and they have since welcomed two children, Archie and Lilibet. In 2021 they gave a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, accusing unnamed members of the royal family of racism. Their December 2022 Netflix documentary detailed the unpleasant experiences they faced as members of the royal family after their 2018 marriage.
Harry’s tell‑all memoir, Spare, published in January 2023, explored his fractured relationship with his father and elder brother, Prince William. The book claimed that William attacked him during an argument about Meghan, an incident that Harry said significantly worsened their relationship. In what appears to be retaliation by the royal house, the duke and duchess were asked to vacate Frogmore Cottage, their British home, over the weekend.
While the king has extended the coronation invitation, it remains unclear whether the couple will attend. Their representative told The Times that “an immediate decision on whether the Duke and Duchess will attend will not be disclosed by us at this time.”
