The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, responded to the protest staged by his Peoples Democratic Party counterpart, Atiku Abubakar, at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters on Monday. Sowore, often described as an activist, argued that activism and politics are essentially the same. He praised Atiku and the PDP for fighting for electoral justice, stating, “Everyone must engage in civil disobedience to extinguish the monumental injustice perpetrated by @inecnigeria.” However, he noted that unlike “revolutionaries,” they do not have the privilege of Department of State Services and police bodyguards to protect them during protests; instead, the police, soldiers, and DSS are unleashed on them with absolute cruelty.
Atiku announced that the protest would continue for an extended period. Speaking to an Arise TV reporter in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, he said, “In fact, this protest will continue for a very long time, either every day or any other day.” Dressed in black, Atiku led PDP leaders and supporters in storming the INEC headquarters to contest the recently concluded presidential election, which declared All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Tinubu the winner. Both the PDP and the Labour Party have rejected the INEC declaration, signed by Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, that Tinubu of the APC won the presidential poll.
