The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains confident that members who left the party amid its current crisis will eventually return, according to Emmanuel Ogidi, Chairman of the PDP South‑South Zonal Caretaker Committee. In a recent interview with Arise News, Ogidi discussed the party’s efforts to move forward despite ongoing challenges. He noted that, apart from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and his faction, all other former members are expected to find their way back to the PDP.
Ogidi explained that Wike and his allies have been expelled from the party, leaving no possibility for their return. He attributed the PDP’s problems to self‑inflicted wounds caused by members who have either been expelled or chosen to leave. Nevertheless, he expressed optimism that those who have moved to other parties or are waiting on the sidelines will eventually rejoin the PDP.
When asked to describe the party’s current state, Ogidi said that despite losing some members, the PDP is moving forward. He emphasized that the party’s grassroots base remains strong, which he believes will help the PDP recover from its challenges. Ogidi also acknowledged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government dealt a significant blow to the PDP by using Wike and his group to weaken the party, but he expressed gratitude that the PDP has recovered from this setback.
The PDP has been working to rebuild and reposition itself after internal conflicts and the loss of key members. Its efforts to regain strength are crucial as Nigeria’s political landscape continues to evolve. As one of the major opposition parties, the PDP’s ability to recover and unite its members will be closely watched by political observers and analysts, and its success in rebuilding will determine its future role in Nigerian politics.
