Sudan Peace Initiative Gains Support in Cairo

Sudanese Alliance Party leader Maj Gen. Kamal Ismail has clarified that the Cessation of War Charter, signed by 45 political parties and national figures in Cairo, aims to end the conflict in Sudan, rather than forming a new political bloc. The charter, backed by former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, has the support of Egypt, which hosted the signing ceremony. Organizers are in talks with non-signatory forces to build broader support for the initiative.

Meanwhile, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned a joint statement by the African Union Commission and the UAE, calling for a humanitarian truce and ceasefire. The ministry argued that the statement wrongly equates the Sudanese government with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and ignored the “peace initiative” announced by the de facto Port Sudan government.

In a separate development, UAE Minister of State Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan Al Nahyan visited Addis Ababa for talks with Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Gedion Timothewos and a delegation of AU leaders. They agreed on an immediate ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian access, and an inclusive transition leading to a civilian-led government.

The US and Saudi Arabia are also engaged in efforts to end the conflict, with US Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos describing talks with senior Saudi officials as “fruitful” and focused on achieving a humanitarian ceasefire. Egyptian and Emirati foreign ministers have also held consultations on Sudan, highlighting the worsening humanitarian situation.

According to media expert and political scientist Dr El Nour, Sudan’s strategic location and vast resources make it a focus for regional and international actors. He emphasized the need for strong diplomacy, military preparedness, and media engagement to protect Sudan’s borders and resources. The Quartet, comprising the US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE, continues to push for ceasefire agreements, with talks in Jeddah and Geneva.

In a recent meeting, Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan thanked US President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their support, reviewing the Saudi-US peace initiative and preparations for the Saudi-Sudanese Strategic Coordination Council. The ongoing regional and international efforts aim to end the war and address the humanitarian consequences across the Horn of Africa, the Arab world, Europe, and the US.
