Rebel group holds funeral for victims of drone strike in eastern DR Congo

The AFC/M23 armed group held a collective funeral in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, for 22 victims of a recent drone strike in Masisi, eastern DRC. The ceremony took place at the Unity Stadium in North Kivu’s provincial capital and was attended by grieving families. Among them was Mubechi Bwere, who traveled to Goma to pay respects to his child, Amani Bisibuzo, who was killed in the attack.

The drone strike, which occurred earlier this month, has intensified the humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC, where civilians continue to bear the brunt of armed violence. The conflict, now in its third decade, has caused forced displacement, trauma, and significant loss of life. According to Médecins Sans Frontières, 42 people—including many women and children—were injured by shrapnel during the strike.

The AFC/M23 rebellion has blamed the Congolese army for the attack, though the government has neither confirmed nor denied the allegation. The United Nations mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) has called for an independent investigation to determine responsibility and has condemned the use of drones and any attacks that target civilians or civilian infrastructure.

Bereaved families are now demanding peace, justice, and an end to impunity. Jean‑Paul Kibinda, a relative of one of the victims, emphasized that “war kills the population” and urged authorities to help end the conflict. As the situation in eastern DRC continues to deteriorate, the international community is pressing for a peaceful resolution. The DRC government and armed groups must work toward a lasting solution to end civilian suffering, and those responsible for the drone strike must be held accountable. The people of the DRC deserve peace, justice, and protection from harm.
