Tinubu should wash hands off Rivers crisis - Frank Tietie

A public affairs analyst has urged President Bola Tinubu to refrain from intervening in the ongoing crisis in Rivers State. Frank Tietie made this statement during an interview on Arise Television, emphasizing that the president’s involvement may be exacerbating the situation.

The crisis escalated on Thursday when the State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, citing a breach of a peace agreement brokered by President Tinubu. The Assembly accused Governor Fubara and his deputy of violating the terms of that agreement.

In response, Tietie argued that it is “morally, politically, and legally wrong” for President Tinubu to be involved, as his participation appears to be causing more harm than good. He stressed the importance of allowing the situation to unfold without presidential interference, noting that Nigeria should operate on principles and precedents.

Tietie’s comments come as the political crisis in Rivers State continues to unfold. The impeachment proceedings have raised concerns about the stability of the state’s government and highlight the need for the federal government to respect the autonomy of state governments, allowing them to resolve internal conflicts without external interference. The crisis tests the ability of state institutions to function independently and resolve disputes without federal intervention, carrying significant implications for Nigeria’s democratic system.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how President Tinubu will respond to Tietie’s call and whether the federal government will intervene further. The outcome of the impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara will be closely watched, given its potential far‑reaching consequences for the state’s political landscape.
