NUGA games 2028 hosting rights awarded to ABU Zaria

The Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria, has been granted provisional rights to host the 28th edition of the Nigerian University Games Association, NUGA, in 2028. This development was announced by the university’s Director of Public Affairs, Auwalu Umar, in a statement issued on Friday in Zaria, Kaduna state. The approval was conveyed in a letter dated December 3, 2025, from the Acting Secretary-General of NUGA, Yunusa Bazza, on behalf of the NUGA Council.

The hosting rights are subject to the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement, MoA, after which the specific dates of the games will be announced. With this development, ABU is now empowered to engage with federal and state governments, as well as private sector partners, to mobilize resources and investments required for the successful organization of the games. The NUGA Council has also granted the university approval to commence upgrades of its sports and ancillary facilities ahead of the event.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, hosting the games for the first time since 2001 will further consolidate ABU’s status as one of Nigeria’s designated sports centers of excellence. The games will serve as a catalyst for infrastructural development within the university, particularly sports facilities, accommodation, transportation, and general campus upgrades. The facility upgrades will attract long-term benefits for students, staff, and the host community.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that sports is a viable driver of economic growth, having evolved into a multi-billion-dollar global industry. The 2028 NUGA Games will provide a platform for students to showcase their talents and unite the nation through sports events at a time of prevailing challenges. ABU’s rich history of producing outstanding athletes, coaches, and sports administrators positions it well to host a successful and memorable event.

The University of Jos hosted the 27th edition of the games from November 6 to 16, 2025, featuring over 18 sports, including athletics, football, basketball, and boxing. The 2028 NUGA Games are expected to have a similar scope, with the university working closely with the NUGA Council and all stakeholders to deliver a well-organized event. The Vice-Chancellor commended the NUGA Council for the confidence reposed in the university and assured that ABU would work tirelessly to ensure a successful tournament. With the provisional hosting rights granted, ABU is set to begin preparations for the 2028 NUGA Games, which promises to be a significant event in Nigeria’s sports calendar.
