Jang: Mutfwang Remains PDP Governor Until 2027

Former Plateau State Governor, Senator Jonah David Jang, has stated that Governor Caleb Mutfwang remains a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governor until the All Progressives Congress (APC) gives him a new mandate in 2027. Jang made this declaration during a press conference in Jos, addressing party stakeholders. He emphasized that Mutfwang still holds the PDP mandate given to him by the people of the state and should not be referred to as an APC governor until he receives a new mandate from the APC in 2027.

Jang, a prominent PDP stalwart in the state, expressed concerns about the wave of defections by politicians to the ruling APC, describing it as a “dangerous march” towards a one-party state. He argued that this trend must be resisted by all democrats, as strong political parties are essential for democratic stability. The PDP, according to Jang, is the only surviving organic political party since 1998, with the resilience and national character to withstand internal and external pressures.

As a democratic institution, the PDP has played a crucial role in stabilizing Nigeria’s democracy since 1999, providing opportunities for numerous Nigerians to serve in various levels of governance. Jang called on party leaders in the state to prioritize people-centered interests over personal ambitions, stressing that this is vital for the party’s survival and democratic stability.

The former governor’s statement comes amid a wave of defections by politicians in Nigeria, with many joining the ruling APC. Jang’s comments highlight the importance of a strong opposition party in ensuring democratic stability and preventing a one-party state. As the 2027 elections approach, the PDP and other opposition parties will face significant challenges in maintaining their relevance and competitiveness.

The PDP, as one of the major political parties in Nigeria, has a crucial role to play in shaping the country’s democratic landscape. Jang’s remarks underscore the need for party leaders to prioritize the interests of the people and work towards strengthening the party’s institutional depth and national character. As the political landscape in Nigeria continues to evolve, the PDP’s ability to adapt and respond to the changing needs of its constituents will be critical to its survival and success.
