Africa Cup Egypt beats Côte d’Ivoire 3-2

Côte d’Ivoire’s title defence at the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations came to an end with a 3-2 quarter-final loss to Egypt. The Elephants’ coach, Émerse Faé, expressed disappointment with the result, citing mistakes at key moments as the decisive factor.

Egypt’s efficient finishing proved to be the difference, with Mohamed Salah scoring and assisting in the match. Despite Côte d’Ivoire’s dominance, they were unable to overcome the early goals conceded. Faé noted that his team’s reaction to the 2-1 scoreline was positive, but the third goal put them in a difficult position.

The coach acknowledged that lapses in concentration cost his team dearly, and it was challenging to explain these mistakes. However, he praised his players’ fight and determination, particularly in the final minutes of the game. Players like Kessié, Fofana, and Diallo continued to press until the end, with Guéla Doué reducing the deficit. The team’s efforts, including corners, crosses, and aerial balls, were ultimately thwarted by Egypt’s defence, led by El Shenawy.

Côte d’Ivoire’s exit from the tournament marks the end of their title defence, but Faé remains focused on improving for upcoming international competitions, including the World Cup. The team will continue to work hard in preparation, aiming to learn from their mistakes and build on their strengths. With the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations continuing, Côte d’Ivoire’s attention will now shift to future tournaments, where they will look to regain their competitive edge.
