The New Nigeria Peoples Party’s national secretary, Ogini Olaposi, has downplayed the influence of the party’s former presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, in Kano State. According to Olaposi, Kwankwaso’s impact as a former governor of the state has diminished significantly and will not affect President Bola Tinubu’s vote count in Kano during the 2027 elections.
Olaposi made these statements in a release on Sunday, highlighting that the party’s ticket for the 2027 elections is open to all members, unlike in 2023 when Kwankwaso was the sole candidate. The party has already seen interest from intending presidential aspirants, including two from the NNPP diaspora, and is open to further entries and potential alliances with like-minded political parties.
The NNPP’s national secretary attributed the reduced influence of Kwankwaso to the expulsion of top members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, including Kwankwaso and Elder Buba Galadima, following anti-party activities after the 2023 presidential election. This expulsion, which has not been reversed, has led to the defection of strategic members to the All Progressives Congress.
Olaposi emphasized that President Tinubu’s national appeal surpasses Kwankwaso’s, particularly in terms of performance as the ruling party. The NNPP’s strategy for 2027 focuses on collaboration and performance, rather than relying on individual influence. With the party’s ticket open to all, the focus shifts to the upcoming elections, where the ruling party’s performance will be a key factor in determining voter decisions.
The development comes as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, with political parties already positioning themselves for the upcoming polls. The NNPP’s openness to alliances and its focus on performance reflect the evolving political landscape in the country. As the elections approach, the ability of parties to adapt and collaborate will be crucial in determining their success.
