Nigerian Healthcare System Needs Regulation Says Toyin Lawani

Nigerian celebrity fashion designer Toyin Lawani has urged the government to regulate the country’s healthcare system, citing concerns over the quality of care provided by some private hospitals. Lawani made the call on social media, alleging that she experienced complications from a spine surgery at a popular Lagos-based hospital, Euracare, due to negligence.

According to Lawani, the hospital’s doctors are not permanent staff, but rather visiting medical professionals who perform surgeries and then leave. She accused the hospital of using international standards to attract clients, while failing to provide adequate care. Lawani advised Nigerians who can afford it to seek medical treatment abroad, citing the risks associated with the current state of healthcare in the country.

Lawani’s comments came after renowned author Chimamanda Adichie shared her own experience with Euracare, alleging negligence in the treatment of her son. Lawani stated that Adichie’s story prompted her to speak out, in the hope of preventing similar incidents and saving lives. She emphasized that the Nigerian government needs to take action to regulate the healthcare system, as currently, anyone can establish a hospital in the country and operate with minimal oversight.

The call for regulation highlights the need for improved standards and accountability in Nigeria’s healthcare sector. With many private hospitals operating in the country, there is a risk of inconsistent quality of care, and in some cases, negligence. The government’s response to these concerns will be crucial in addressing the issues raised by Lawani and Adichie, and in ensuring that Nigerians have access to safe and effective healthcare.

The Nigerian healthcare system faces numerous challenges, including a shortage of skilled medical professionals, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to quality care. The government has launched initiatives aimed at improving the sector, but more needs to be done to address the systemic issues that are putting patients’ lives at risk. As the debate over healthcare regulation continues, it is essential to prioritize the needs of patients and ensure that hospitals are held to high standards of care.
