The Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the state government’s decision to allocate N3.69 billion for the upgrade and development of the Chief Reuben Fasoranti Park, describing it as a misplaced priority. According to the state PDP chairman, Mr. Modupe Aisida, the project is insensitive to the economic challenges faced by the people of the state.
The park, located opposite the Governor’s Office Complex in Akure, is expected to gulp one percent of the state’s total capital expenditure in the 2026 budget. Aisida argued that the funds could be better utilized to address pressing issues such as dilapidated school buildings, inadequate healthcare facilities, and housing deficits. He questioned the wisdom of building a park in front of the government secretariat, suggesting that it would be more suitable in a location where people can relax and unwind.
The PDP chairman also expressed disappointment at the state government’s neglect of critical projects, citing the incomplete Shagari Estate flyover project, which has been ongoing for over two years. He emphasized the need for the government to focus on life-impactful projects that address the needs of the people, rather than investing in a “mere relaxation centre.”
Aisida’s comments come as the state government faces criticism for its priorities in allocating funds. The PDP chairman noted that the state has a significant housing deficit, with many companies seeking to develop estates due to the government’s inaction. He also criticized the government’s plan to build houses for political office holders while neglecting the needs of civil servants and the general public.
The state government has yet to respond to the PDP’s criticism, as the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, was unavailable for comment. The controversy surrounding the Chief Reuben Fasoranti Park project highlights the ongoing debate about the state government’s priorities and its response to the needs of the people. As the state prepares for future development projects, it remains to be seen how the government will address the concerns of the opposition and the public.
