Labour Party Crisis: Usman Faction Rejects Abure’s Leadership

A faction of the Labour Party led by Nenadi Usman has criticized Julius Abure for claiming to be the party’s National Chairman following the Supreme Court’s judgment on April 4, 2025. The faction’s Interim National Secretary, Darlington Nwochocha, issued a statement in Abuja, calling on the Prosecutor-General of the Federation to expedite action on recommendations for Abure’s prosecution for alleged impersonation and other offenses.

The statement responds to Abure’s earlier claim that the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) position on not uploading the particulars of Labour Party aspirants for the February council polls in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was being misinterpreted. Abure also referenced the Supreme Court judgment, which the Usman-led faction believes was misconstrued.

According to Nenadi Usman, the Labour Party is not for sale, and Abure and his associates should seek legitimate means of livelihood rather than attempting to commercialize the party’s structures. Usman’s faction also criticized Abure and his supporters for instituting over 20 court cases against INEC and the Labour Party leadership, led by Usman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha, across various courts in the federation and the FCT.

The development highlights the ongoing leadership crisis within the Labour Party, which has been plagued by internal conflicts and power struggles. The Supreme Court judgment has further exacerbated the situation, with different factions interpreting the ruling in conflicting ways. The Prosecutor-General’s office is expected to review the recommendations for Abure’s prosecution, which may lead to further developments in the case.

The Labour Party’s internal crisis has significant implications for the country’s political landscape, particularly in the lead-up to future elections. The party’s ability to resolve its internal conflicts and present a united front will be crucial in determining its electoral prospects. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the party’s leadership crisis will be resolved and what impact it will have on the country’s political landscape.
