Cardiovascular disease prevention through regular medical checks and healthy living habits

The wife of Anambra State’s governor, Nonye Soludo, has emphasized the importance of regular medical checks and healthy habits in combating the rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases. As the founder of the ‘Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative’, she notes that most cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by addressing risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diets, obesity, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol consumption.

Soludo made these remarks after her weekly statewide ‘Healthy Living Walks’ and workout sessions, which aim to promote awareness about cardiovascular risks and prevention. She expressed concern that many people neglect routine heart checks, contributing to the increase in cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure, cardiac arrest, and stroke.

According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally, accounting for over 17.9 million deaths annually. In Nigeria, the death toll from these diseases is doubling annually due to poor medical checks, negligence, and ignorance.

Soludo stressed that healthy living is crucial in preventing cardiovascular deaths, and that regular exercise and a healthy diet are essential for maintaining good heart health. She also urged individuals with a family history of cardiovascular diseases to be cautious of their lifestyle choices and avoid behaviors that can exacerbate the underlying condition.

The ‘Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative’ aims to promote a culture of well-being, encouraging people to adopt healthy habits and avoid disease threats. Soludo emphasized that about 90% of illnesses are a result of individual actions, and that healthy living can start with simple steps such as eating natural foods and engaging in regular exercise.

In a previous event, Soludo led a ‘Healthy Living Walk’ across communities in Anambra State, promoting physical fitness and healthy eating as a preventative measure against diseases like cardiovascular issues. The event brought together government officials, health workers, students, and residents, highlighting the importance of good nutrition and physical activity for both children and adults.

The Anambra first lady’s efforts aim to raise awareness about the importance of healthy living and disease prevention, particularly in the context of cardiovascular diseases. By promoting regular medical checks, healthy habits, and lifestyle changes, Soludo hopes to contribute to a reduction in the incidence of these diseases and promote overall well-being in her community.
