Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has ordered all cabinet members to undergo compulsory medical examinations after the sudden death of his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo. The directive was issued during a cabinet meeting in Yenagoa, where the governor stressed the importance of regular health checks for public officers with hectic schedules. Governor Diri acknowledged that death is inevitable but emphasized that preventive measures can help maintain good health and extend life. An autopsy has been performed on the late deputy governor, and the results will be released at the appropriate time. He also warned against politicising Ewhrudjakpo’s death and announced the formation of a burial committee to manage the funeral arrangements.
Ewhrudjakpo’s death on 11 December 2025 shocked the state, prompting an outpouring of condolences on social media and raising questions about the circumstances of his passing. The state government’s initial delay in announcing his death fueled speculation and public concern.
In a separate development, Health Commissioner Seiyafa Brisibe presented Governor Diri with an award plaque and a dummy cheque for $400,000. Bayelsa was named the first runner‑up in the Primary Health Care Leadership Challenge for the South‑South region, a competition funded by UNICEF, the Dangote Group and other international bodies that recognises excellence in healthcare leadership. Governor Diri described the award as “refreshing and encouraging,” attributing the state’s success to the government’s investment in the health sector. The recognition underscores Bayelsa’s commitment to improving its healthcare system, a priority that Diri’s administration continues to pursue in order to enhance services and the well‑being of its citizens.
