Nigeria Fuel Consumption Rises 20 Percent

Nigeria’s premium motor spirit consumption increased to 63.7 million liters per day in December 2025, a significant rise from 52.9 million liters per day in November. This is according to the latest data released by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). The data shows a sharp 20.4 percent month-to-month increase in fuel consumption, totaling 10.8 million liters per day.

The total domestic supply of petrol also rose to 74.2 million liters per day in December, up from 71.5 million liters per day the previous month. Notably, the Dangote Refinery’s contribution to the domestic market increased to 32.01 million liters per day, a 64.4 percent rise from 19.47 million liters per day in November. However, the refinery fell short of its target to supply 50 million liters per day to the domestic market.

In December, Dangote Refinery reduced its petrol price to N699, which subsequently led to a retail price of N739 per liter at MRS filling stations nationwide. The Managing Director of Dangote Refinery, David Bird, has stated that the price of Dangote petrol at N739 per liter is competitive. Nevertheless, Professor Wumi Iledare, an emeritus professor of petroleum economics, has described the price as a market distortion.

The increase in fuel consumption and supply is a significant development in Nigeria’s energy sector. The Dangote Refinery’s growing contribution to the domestic market is also noteworthy, despite not meeting its supply target. As the Nigerian government continues to work towards stabilizing the energy sector, the dynamics of fuel pricing and supply will remain a key area of focus. The impact of these developments on the Nigerian economy and consumers will be closely monitored in the coming months.
