Niger Bridge: FG Bans Sand Mining Nearby

The Nigerian Federal Government has imposed a ban on sand mining within a 10-kilometer radius of the River Niger to safeguard the First and Second Niger Bridges. This decision, announced by Minister of Works David Umahi, aims to protect critical federal infrastructure across the country. The ban was approved by the Federal Executive Council as part of a broader effort to preserve key national assets.

Umahi made the announcement during the commissioning of the Second Niger Bridge Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras Monitoring Centre in Asaba. The minister emphasized that tolling on the Second Niger Bridge will not commence until all access roads in the Anambra and Delta sections are completed. The CCTV monitoring centre is designed to enhance security along the federal highway, eliminating the need for security checkpoints and enabling rapid response to emergencies within a five-minute timeframe.

The minister directed the Delta State Police Command to enforce the ban and arrest offenders. The Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, praised the Federal Government for completing the Second Niger Bridge, highlighting its socio-economic benefits. The Igwe of Obosi, Chidubem Iweka, Chairman of the Anambra State Council of Traditional Rulers, noted that the bridge’s opening has reduced traffic congestion on the First Niger Bridge and eased movement during the holiday season.

Iweka expressed optimism that the installation of security cameras would boost commuters’ confidence when using the road. He also called for the speedy completion of the access roads to the Second Niger Bridge. The Federal Government’s efforts to protect critical infrastructure and enhance security are crucial for the country’s development and the safety of its citizens. The successful completion of the Second Niger Bridge and the implementation of security measures underscore the government’s commitment to improving the nation’s transportation network and ensuring public safety.
