Fire destroys over 100 houses at Borno IDP camp

A devastating fire outbreak has ravaged the Water Board IDP Camp in Monguno, Borno, destroying over 100 thatched houses, according to the police command. The incident, which occurred on Friday at approximately 4:30 p.m., was reported by Bukar Mbati, the camp chairman, at the Monguno Police Station.

The fire, which engulfed the thatched houses, also destroyed foodstuff and other household items, leaving many displaced persons without shelter or essential belongings. Fortunately, the prompt response of the state fire service, police, and other security agencies stationed at the camp helped bring the fire under control.

A team led by Supol Monguno conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the incident, and photographs were taken for documentation purposes. Thankfully, no lives were lost, and no injuries were recorded. However, the value of properties destroyed is yet to be ascertained.

The police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. The incident highlights the vulnerability of internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in makeshift camps, who often lack access to basic amenities and are exposed to various risks, including fires.

The Water Board IDP Camp in Monguno is one of the many camps established to provide shelter to people displaced by the ongoing conflict in the region. The camp is home to thousands of IDPs who have been forced to flee their homes due to insecurity and violence.

The destruction of homes and property in the camp is a significant setback for the affected individuals and families, who are already struggling to survive in challenging conditions. The incident underscores the need for increased support and resources to be allocated to IDP camps to improve living conditions and prevent such disasters from occurring in the future.

The police and other relevant authorities are working to provide assistance to those affected by the fire, and an assessment of the damage is ongoing to determine the extent of the losses. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations, particularly in areas affected by conflict and displacement.
