A former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Osun State, Dr Akin Ogunbiyi, has expressed support for the party’s campaign strategy ahead of the 2026 general elections. During a meeting with leaders and members of his political organization in Osogbo, Ogunbiyi instructed his campaign coordinators to integrate into the campaign structure of the APC governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.
The meeting was convened to review the outcome of the APC governorship primary election held in December 2025 and outline the next steps for party mobilization. Ogunbiyi urged party members to accept the primary election results and focus on strengthening the APC’s prospects in the August 8, 2026, election. He noted that Oyebamiji’s emergence as the party’s flagbearer has addressed long-standing expectations within the Osun West Senatorial District.
According to Ogunbiyi, stakeholders from the zone had consistently advocated for a governorship candidate from Osun West, and the development was welcomed by party members in the area. He emphasized that the priority is for Oyebamiji to become the elected governor of Osun State, which would pave the way for him to emerge as the senatorial candidate of the West.
Ogunbiyi stated that his personal ambition to govern the state has been placed on hold, and all aspirants who sought the APC governorship ticket have agreed to work together to ensure the party’s success at the polls. He revealed that mobilization efforts are ongoing in Iwo Federal Constituency to secure votes for the APC, with over 170,000 voters in the three local government areas.
Ogunbiyi’s decision to support the APC candidate comes after he was disqualified from participating in the governorship primary due to alleged irregularities in his nomination process. As a former flagbearer of the Accord Party during the 2022 governorship election, Ogunbiyi defected to the APC, citing his desire to bring development to the Osun West Senatorial District, which is considered one of the most underdeveloped zones in the state.
The APC’s campaign strategy is expected to focus on mobilizing support across the state, with a particular emphasis on the Osun West Senatorial District. With Ogunbiyi’s support, the party is poised to strengthen its prospects in the upcoming election. As the 2026 general elections approach, the APC’s ability to unite its members and mobilize support will be crucial in determining its success at the polls.
