The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into the tragic incident in which a soldier killed his colleagues and then himself at Forward Operations Base (FOB) Rabbah in Sokoto State. The event occurred on the evening of Sunday, 5 March 2023, while troops were deployed for internal security operations.

Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, said the circumstances leading to the shooting could not be immediately determined, noting that the soldier turned the weapon on himself right after the attack. The Army has therefore constituted a Board of Inquiry (BOI) to uncover the facts and to help prevent similar occurrences in the future.

General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Major General Godwin Mutkut—who also serves as Commander of the Joint Task Force Northwest Operation—along with other senior officers, have visited the site. They have been urged to look out for one another, report any anomalies among their colleagues, and remain calm and committed in the performance of their duties.
