Manchester United’s humiliating 7‑0 defeat to Liverpool was a stark reality check for Erik ten Hag’s side, but the manager has urged his players to bounce back this week. A week after winning their first trophy in six years, United travelled to Anfield with confidence, having suffered only one loss in 22 games and fresh from a League Cup triumph over Newcastle at Wembley. Their impressive run also featured a landmark Europa League victory against Barcelona as they chased success on four fronts. Yet the visit ended in disaster, with Liverpool scoring six goals in the second half and handing United the joint‑heaviest defeat in the 20‑time English champions’ history. The loss dashes any talk of a possible quadruple and leaves United, now third, 14 points behind leaders Arsenal and far behind second‑placed Manchester City.

Ten Hag was scathing in his assessment, labeling the performance “unprofessional” and “unacceptable.” The display highlighted how much work the Dutchman still has to do to rebuild a club that has not won the Premier League since 2013, despite clear signs of progress this season. United had already endured an embarrassing 6‑3 loss to Manchester City and a 4‑0 defeat at Brentford, but the Anfield debacle marked a new low. Ten Hag urged his team to use the setback as motivation for the remainder of the season, beginning with Thursday’s Europa League last‑16 first leg at home to Real Betis. “We have seen in the past we can bounce back — after Brentford, after Manchester City,” he told the BBC. “This is definitely a strong setback and is unacceptable. I’m really disappointed and angry about it. It is a reality check. We have to take this strong.”

After an evenly matched first half, United were torn apart by a Liverpool side that themselves had suffered a 5‑2 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid a month earlier. Liverpool’s midfield dominated, leaving United’s defence shambolic as the home team scored at will. United captain Bruno Fernandes drew particularly harsh criticism from former United captains Roy Keane and Gary Neville. Keane told Sky Sports, “Fernandes’ body language today was nothing short of a disgrace… He’s a really talented boy, he’s your captain. He’s got so much talent, but his body language, waving his arms and not running back… You wouldn’t be happy with him in our dressing room.” Neville called United’s showing a “disgrace” but backed Ten Hag to act quickly ahead of the Europa League clash with Betis, saying, “I think Erik Ten Hag will deal with them very, very strongly in the next 24, 48 hours — he’s done that already this season a few times — and I’d hope that normal service will be resumed by the end of next week.”

United’s upcoming fixtures provide an opportunity to regain momentum, with relegation‑threatened Southampton visiting Old Trafford after the Betis game. Andy Mitten, editor of the United We Stand fanzine, urged calm and perspective despite the shock at Anfield. “I know there is a lot of emotion at the minute but United are still looking very comfortable in third, they are seven points clear of Liverpool,” he told the BBC. “Not a chance I would have seen that at the start of the season. Won the League Cup, still in the FA Cup, still in the Europa League.”
