Nigerian rice production hindered by poor seed varieties

Nigerian Rice Struggles to Compete Globally Due to Limited Access to Quality Varieties

A major obstacle hindering the competitiveness of Nigerian rice in the global market is the limited access to high-quality rice varieties, according to Isaiah Gabriel, Executive Director of the Foundation for Sustainable Smallholder Solutions (FSSS). In an interview with journalists in Abuja, Gabriel emphasized the need for a seed varieties enhancement project to support farmers in making data-driven decisions, ultimately improving productivity and yields.

The lack of suitable seed varieties for specific agro-ecological zones is a significant challenge faced by many Nigerian farmers, resulting in reduced output and quality. Gabriel stressed that the absence of good rice varieties is a primary reason for the inability of local rice to compete globally. To address this issue, the proposed project aims to provide farmers, breeders, and other stakeholders in the agricultural value chain with reliable data to inform their decision-making processes.

By generating and sharing data on various rice varieties across different agro-ecologies, the project seeks to identify the best options for farmers, enabling them to access the right seeds and improve their productivity. This approach is expected to enhance the overall quality and competitiveness of Nigerian rice in the global market. Gabriel underscored the importance of making data available to farmers, stating that this will empower them to make informed decisions and improve productivity.

The initiative is critical in addressing the long-standing challenges faced by Nigerian farmers, who have struggled to access high-quality seeds suitable for their specific farming conditions. By providing farmers with the necessary tools and information, the project has the potential to transform the country’s rice production sector, ultimately contributing to the growth of the national economy. As the project moves forward, it is expected to play a vital role in enhancing the competitiveness of Nigerian rice in the global market.
