Cancer Awareness Advocate Receives N10m Donation

The Delta State Government has donated N10 million to support “A Ride for Life”, a cancer awareness initiative founded by Miss Chineyenwa Judith Amadi. The presentation took place at the Conference Hall of the Secretary to the State Government in Asaba, with Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, presenting the cheque on behalf of the government. Dr Emu described cancer as a devastating disease and stated that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori personally directed the donation to support the initiative.

The donation is part of the government’s efforts to alleviate human suffering, with Dr Emu noting that cancer affects not only individuals but also families, communities, and the healthcare system. He emphasized the importance of supporting initiatives that ease the burden of cancer and announced plans to establish a cancer facility in the state to provide quality treatment to residents.

Miss Amadi’s initiative, “A Ride for Life”, aims to raise funds for cancer patients across Nigeria who cannot afford treatment. She has embarked on a transcontinental motorbike ride across 16 countries to raise awareness and funds for the cause. The Delta State Government’s donation is a significant contribution to her efforts, and Dr Emu commended her dedication to the advocacy.

State Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaeme, stressed the importance of prevention, highlighting that early detection and routine medical checks can significantly reduce the risk of cancer. He emphasized the need for regular screenings, especially for cervical and breast cancer.

In a separate development, the Texas Elites Forum, a civic group, concluded its 2025 end-of-year activities with a series of health, youth, and education interventions in the Orerokpe community in Delta. The four-day programme included a two-day free medical outreach, which provided free medical consultations, drugs, and basic diagnostic tests to over 1,300 residents.

The Delta State Government’s donation to “A Ride for Life” and the Texas Elites Forum’s health interventions demonstrate the growing efforts to address cancer and healthcare challenges in Nigeria. With cancer being a significant public health concern, such initiatives are crucial in raising awareness, providing support, and improving access to quality healthcare services.
