Tinubu Sends Delegation to Katsina Over Death of Islamic Scholar and Ex Customs Boss

A high-powered Federal Government delegation, led by Deputy President of the Senate Barau I. Jibrin, visited Katsina State on Thursday to pay condolences to the government and people of the state over the passing of two prominent personalities. The deceased individuals, renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Habibu Yahaya Kaura and former Assistant Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service Lawal Bagiwa, died on January 21, 2026, and were buried the same day in accordance with Islamic customs.

The delegation, which included Governor of Imo State Hope Uzodimma, Governor of Yobe State Mai Mala Buni, and Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Finance James Abiodun Faleke, was received by Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda. At the residence of the late Islamic cleric, Senator Jibrin conveyed the condolences of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the family of Sheikh Kaura and the people of Katsina State.

According to Senator Jibrin, President Tinubu regarded the late cleric as a truthful and upright Islamic scholar whose death represents a major loss to the nation. The president recognized the late Sheikh’s immense contributions to the country and acknowledged his devotion to the service of Allah and humanity. Special prayers were offered for the repose of the soul of the late Sheikh, with supplications to Allah to grant him a place in paradise and to give his family and followers the strength to bear the loss.

The delegation also visited the residence of the late Lawal Bagiwa, where they condoled with his family and the people of Katsina State. Senator Jibrin described the late Bagiwa as an accomplished and disciplined public servant who served Nigeria diligently in the Nigeria Customs Service. Governor Radda expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu and the delegation for the condolence visit, describing it as a gesture that meant a lot to the government and people of Katsina State.

The visit underscores the Federal Government’s recognition of the contributions of the late Sheikh Habibu Yahaya Kaura and Alhaji Lawal Bagiwa to religious life and public service in Nigeria. The delegation’s condolences highlight the importance of honoring the memories of notable individuals who have made significant contributions to the country’s development.
