Elon Musk to back Republicans in midterms

Elon Musk is reportedly set to support the Republican Party in the upcoming midterm elections, despite his recent disagreements with US President Donald Trump. According to the Wall Street Journal, Musk, who owns X, Space X, and Tesla, has been approached by top Republicans, including Vice President J.D. Vance, to help the party maintain its majority in both chambers of Congress.

Musk has already taken steps to back Republican candidates, routing $10 million to a super PAC supporting Kentucky businessman Nate Morris, who is running for the Senate seat being vacated by Mitch McConnell. His political team has also been meeting with prospective vendors, focusing on digital and text-messaging specialists. The goal is to rally voters who previously supported Trump but tend to be less engaged in congressional elections.

Musk’s plans are not yet finalized, and the exact mechanisms for supporting the GOP have not been determined. However, his involvement in the 2024 election cycle was significant, with donations totaling $288 million to support Trump and other Republicans. After Trump’s victory, Musk was appointed head of the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency.

The relationship between Musk and Trump cooled in mid-2025 when Musk criticized Trump’s tax-and-spending package, calling it “utterly insane and destructive.” However, the two appear to have put their differences aside, having been seen together at a memorial service and dining together. Musk’s return to the political arena comes as the Republican Party faces concerns about losing its congressional majority. A recent New York Times/Siena poll showed Democrats leading on a generic congressional ballot 48% to 43% among registered voters.

Trump has emphasized the importance of the midterms, telling House Republicans that they must win to prevent his impeachment. Musk’s support could be crucial in rallying voters and helping the party maintain its majority. As the elections approach, it remains to be seen how Musk’s efforts will unfold and what impact they will have on the outcome. The midterm elections are set to take place in November, and the Republican Party is gearing up for a competitive campaign. With Musk’s involvement, the party may be able to gain an edge in the elections and maintain its control of Congress.
