PDP Condemns Plateau Killings, Demands Action

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the killing of seven citizens at a mining site in Wat, Kuru District of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State. In a press statement issued on Friday, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Choji Felix Dalyop, described the incident as a “senseless and tragic act” carried out by “enemies of the state”.

The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, January 21, has highlighted the deepening security crisis in the state and the apparent failure of the government to protect lives and property. The PDP held government authorities accountable, stating that repeated attacks and loss of lives have eroded public confidence and threatened democratic stability in Plateau State, a region often referred to as the “Home of Peace and Tourism”.

According to the party, the killings are a clear indication of the government’s failure to fulfill its primary purpose, as stated in Section 14(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which prioritizes the security and welfare of citizens. The PDP cited a 2025 fact-finding committee set up by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, which reportedly found that the attackers came from neighboring states.

The party is demanding a transparent investigation into the killings, swift prosecution of perpetrators, and a clear, actionable security plan to address the root causes of violence. The PDP emphasized that condemnation without concrete action would no longer suffice, and expressed solidarity with the victims’ families. The party also urged national and international stakeholders to closely monitor the security and human rights situation in Plateau State.

The incident has sparked concerns about the escalating violence and insecurity in the region, and the need for effective measures to protect citizens and prevent future attacks. The PDP’s call for a comprehensive security plan and transparent investigation underscores the importance of addressing the underlying causes of the violence and ensuring accountability for those responsible. As the situation continues to unfold, the international community will be watching closely to see how the government responds to the crisis and works to restore peace and stability in Plateau State.
