Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi said on Monday that he does not condemn the South‑East for voting overwhelmingly for Peter Obi in the February 25, 2023 presidential election. Speaking at Ebonyi International Airport in Onueke, Ezza South Local Government Area, he addressed stakeholders and members of the Ezza clan.

Umahi clarified that he is not opposed to the achievements of the Labour Party’s presidential candidate. “The All Progressives Congress is not angry and does not condemn Obi’s feat; the South‑East has made a strong statement,” he said. He added a metaphor: “One digs with two arrowed woods so that if one fails to hit the target, the other will succeed.”

As chairman of the South‑East Governors’ Forum, Umahi emphasized the importance of reserving space for negotiation after internal deliberations, noting that this approach doubles assurance. He referenced Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State, who highlighted this point and was initially criticized, but whose words have now proven accurate.

“The wise thing for the Igbos to do is to acknowledge that we cannot become president alone,” Umahi warned. “We must work with other tribes, as the South‑West did with the North and succeeded. We need to stop being parochial and clannish. No one could have believed that Obi was speaking with me until the last minute.”
